Halifax Wins Bid to Host 2010 AAPA Convention
Event could attract 700+ port professionals from the Western Hemisphere
Halifax has been named the host city for the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) 2010 Convention. The city beat out Portland, Oregon to host the annual event which brings together members of the Alliance of the Ports of Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States.
“We have a world-class port in a world-class city and this conference allows us to showcase all we have to offer,” says Karen Oldfield, President and CEO, Halifax Port Authority. “In the same way that our Port means local economic benefits, this major conference will help generate spin-offs for local businesses.”
The Halifax Port Authority worked together with Destination Halifax and the World Trade and Convention Centre on the successful bid and multi-media presentation. Representatives from the Halifax Port Authority and Destination Halifax presented the bid to the AAPA Board of Directors in Washington, D.C on April 4.
“An event of this caliber will bring hundreds of visitors to Nova Scotia in the fall of 2010,” says Patricia Lyall, CEO, Destination Halifax. “Halifax is a premier destination for attracting events of this magnitude.”
The event could bring over 700 port professionals to our region from throughout the Western Hemisphere. Each year, the convention is hosted by a member port city and offers activities that reflect the unique spirit and qualities of the hosting community.
2010 will be the first time the convention returns to Canada since 2001 when it was held in Quebec City. The convention previously visited Halifax in 1993.
